Whether you’re planning on purchasing custom merchandise for personal use or to help promote a business, you’re going to need to decide how the products are going to be printed. Generally any company that is offering a printing service will know what kind of printing process is best for you, but it’s always good to know why you’re receiving that particular process. The two most common printing processes are screen printing and dye sublimation printing.

Both will get the job done, but in order to decide which option is best for you, there are a number of factors you need to take into consideration. So what exactly are the differences between the two?

Screen Printing

The process of screen printing involves creating a number of “stencils” and then layering the colors onto each other to create a finished product. Screen printing is essentially creating an image on the product. Unfortunately this means that it is more prone to fading and cracking. Generally screen printing is not ideal for more complex designs or if you are basing the design off of an actual photo image, as the process of creating each individual stencil for the design can be a very long and tedious one, not to mention expensive.

Usually screen printing is best suited when creating an image of three or fewer colors. However, it is ideal for orders of larger quantities, as the printing process is actually very fast. In addition, screen printing tends to be much cheaper than dye sublimation.

Dye Sublimation

The process of dye sublimation is the process of actually dying the material that is being printed on. Usually dye sublimation is reserved for prints done on textile products, such as t-shirts. However, dye sublimation has recently come a long way and is now offered on a variety of different materials, including plastic and metal. Because the material that is being printed upon is actually being dyed rather than just having an image layered on top of it, dye sublimation tends to last much longer without fading or cracking than screen printing. As a result of this, it does tend to be a bit more expensive than screen printing. However, if you’re looking for a higher quality product that needs to last, dye sublimation is the way to go.

If you compare two products that are exactly alike, save for the printing process that was used to make it, you generally won’t be able to see a huge difference between the two. The biggest difference will be the feel between the two. You won’t be able to feel any difference in the material when dye sublimation has been used, but you will usually be able to feel the layer of ink used during screen printing. Sublimation on garments is very effective with a lot more scope for creativity.

It’s always a good idea to take into consideration the different printing options you have, as well as the various factors and differences they present. Choosing the right process for your particular needs can make a huge difference on the effect your product will have on potential customers, as well as how well-made and durable the finished product turns out.

These days’ promotional products are hugely popular in spreading brand name awareness for just about any company. By using these items, a company ensures a variety of things. The plan was to help gain people’s attention for the inauguration that was about to take place. While this isn’t exactly the same as today’s branded item being used to gain attention for various companies and organizations, the idea was the same and everything has stemmed from those buttons.

Various different products were used throughout the 1800s (calendars and pens mostly,) but the use of promotional merchandise as a means of advertisements didn’t occur until the mid-to-late 1800s. A man named Jasper Freemont Meek, who owned a newspaper and printing service in Ohio, saw a young school girl drop the books she was carrying. This simple event spurred Meek into revolutionizing the use of printed bags. He proceeded to go to his close friend, the owner of Cantwell Shoes, with an idea. The idea was to use Meek’s printing service to print the words “Buy Cantwell Shoes” on a number of burlap sacks and give them out to any child who came into his store. The production and use of promotional products took off from there.

Meek (along with many others who jumped at Meek’s new idea) began producing printed products for a number of other companies. You’ve probably even heard of some of the companies that Meek helped produce products for. Coca-Cola is probably the most notable (Meek produced metal advertising trays for Coca-Cola that are now practically priceless collectible items.)

By the early 1900s the Advertising Manufacturers Association was founded by 12 promotional manufacturers of the time. The Advertising Manufactures Association continued to grow and expand during the following couple of decades, only taking a slight hit during the Great Depression, but coming right back up by the 1940s.

This trend quickly spread around the world and today most savvy Australian business owners use branded merchandise to get their name into the marketplace, promote events and reward loyal customers. Products available range from the more basic pens and notepads through to a whole range of innovative corporate gifts, clothing, bags, electronics and novelty items. From George Washington inauguration buttons to just about every kind of promotional product you could possibly imagine, the corporate branding industry has come a very long way.

Famous for its history in whaling that is now preserved in a museum. Of course taking a boat trip out for a more traditional whale watching experience is an absolute must. Albany is also known for its great diving experiences. Located just off the coast, the HMS Perth Dive Wreck is a must for anyone even remotely interested in diving.

Walpole is another great stop for anyone interested in taking in the wide variety of scenic experiences the region has to offer. Located just 10 minutes north of Walpole, the region boasts the well-known Valley of the Giants Tree Top Walk. By climbing to the top of the walk, you’ll find yourself over 40 meters above the ground, with a bird’s eye view of some of the tallest trees in the world. It is truly a breathtaking experience.

It wouldn’t be appropriate to leave out the magnificent city of Perth. The capital and largest city in Western Australia and fourth largest city in all of Australia, it is a truly beautiful place. The Swan River divides the city north and south and has all manner of water sports as well as superb wineries. Kings Park is an elevated park that offers great walking tracks and superb views of the Swan River and downtown Perth.

For those out there looking to undertake a bit of an adventure, there is always the Bibbulmun Track, a walking trail of over 1,000 kilometers, which leads all the way from Albany to Perth. With plenty of camping locations scattered along the trail, it is a great choice for anyone who wants to get out and experience nature the way it should be.
With such a wide variety of activities and locations to enjoy, South West Australia is without a doubt one of the best kept secrets in the world. There is literally something for everyone and it would practically take a lifetime to see and experience everything there is to offer. Planning one trip simply will not be enough.

 Caps, also known as hats, have been around for centuries. Though it’s hard to say when exactly the first time someone covered their head with an animal skin as a form of protection, but it didn’t take long for it to be realized that covering your head is a wise choice. In today’s world the variety of  hats is practically limitless. But the variety of hats available has come a long way.

Hats have served a wide variety of uses throughout history. Caps were known to be used in ancient Greece for a variety of reasons. For example, the Phrygian cap was given to freed slaves to indicate their freedom. In times of old, oftentimes women were expected to keep their heads covered, though items like veils and hoods were usually used. The trend eventually evolved to become more than just an expectation for women to be adorned with some sort of covering of the head.

By the 1500s a wider variety of caps began to come into the picture. The word “milliner” was coined to mean the maker of hats. Traditionally a job held by women, the job entailed the actual making of hats, as well as the selection of different materials and decorations to be selected to help complement an outfit as a whole. It was at this point that hats began to play a larger role in fashion and social status. They were often adorned with ribbons, flowers, and feathers.

By the 1800s caps were made with a variety of materials, including the traditional straw material, as well as imitation straw materials, such as paper, cardboard, and horsehair, and the then innovative materials of velvet and tulle.

By the 1900s many early versions of popular modern hats had come into the picture. Baseball caps, named for the baseball players who helped popularize them, were wildly popular. They were originally used to help protect a player’s eyes from the sun, though the peak (also known by some as the bill or the brim) was much shorter in those days.

The baseball cap is quite possibly the most popular cap today. Upholding its original use, they are still widely used in sports not only to help protect a player’s eyes from the sun’s rays, but also a way of sporting their team’s name or logo, as most baseball caps some sort of logo or design on the front. In addition, they are also used by military branches all over the use as part of the official uniform.

In addition to athletic and professional use, baseball caps are also a popular promotional item. Usually constructed of plastic mesh with a foam front, they are often given out by various companies, sporting the company’s logo. These caps have come to be known as “trucker caps” or “gimme caps.”

Having seen a variety of uses throughout history, including an almost mandatory article of clothing for women, a way of showing others your social status, and of course the original use as a means of protection, hats will never stop being part of popular culture.
